What is it? A multi-award winning restaurant that's a modern Australian institution. Why go? Owner and chef Philip Johnson was a pioneer of the Brisbane restaurant scene, and more than 20 years on, Johnson’s unfussy fare is still a favourite. In the outer north-eastern suburb of Newstead, E’cco Bistro continues to keep it simple with favourites like grilled scallops, gnocchi swimming in pea velouté (silky-buttery sauce), and refreshing desserts like mango mille-feuille (layered puff pastry), strawberry pavlova, and a simply yet effective affogato. The five-course set menu – with a vegan option – is decent bang for your buck too at $120 per person for a certifiably stomach-filling feast. About 90 per cent of E’cco’s menu is gluten-free too, so no one is going hungry – not here, not today.
